How do I activsync my laptop to my PDA?

My I-mate PDA2k has crashed (reverting to original factory settings) and wiped all it’s loaded files including phone contact numbers.

Normally they could be reloaded from my Toshiba Qosmio (running XP) when the PDA is recharged and data synchronised via it’s usb connected ActivSync cradle.

However the laptop does not recognise the PDA. It keeps asking for a device name and won’t accept any that are offered. The laptop suggested name of Pocket_PC won’t connect as it is said to be already in use.
The alternative offered is to create a Guest Link which allows data sharing whilst connected but does not offer data syncronisation which suggests that the PDA will not retain data once disconnected.

Anyone have a solution for this quandary?
Geek: Thanks for your input. Having followed your advice, ActivSync has been unistalled yet has not re-installed or configured on Start up. How can it` be restored to co-ordinate with that of the PDA?
