Can’t connect my pda phone to network using wifi?

A while back, my friend’s Dad had some service where he had a wireless receiver modem of some sort in his house from which he received internet. It was completely wireless, but wasn’t through a cell phone company or anything. Does anyone know what I’m talking about and if this still exists? I want to have internet for my PDA/Phone but I don’t want to pay for a rip off data plan from T-Mobile, so I’m looking for alternatives, if any (other than dialing up, and connecting to free wi-fi networks). How do i connect a PDA and a computer thru wireless?
I have a computer running XP pro and a PDA running windows mobile 5.0. Both of them have wireless (802.11g). I want my pda to access the computer (remote desktop and stuff). How do I connect the two devices?
