How good is a smart phone as a modem for a computer?

How good is it? And can anyone recommend a moderately priced smart phone with contract that could work well in that capacity?
i use an iPhone dont think it matters which smart phone as long as it can be used as a router
also it must support 3g, and you actually get a 3g signal where your mum lives Gabriel
