smart phones. does anyone like them, are they really smart? or just useless because of too much complication
serial_strat asked:
there is a lot of marketing about these “phones” they are supposed to do everything and I’m wondering if it is true or just a marketing gimmick. My feeling is that by being able to do everything they are like a PC … full of bugs, of mediocre quality and heavy. Who needs a camera on the phone when there are much better cameras around. Who needs a TV on the phone when there are better TV already ?

If some one can convince me I might end up buying one.

Depends on what you intend to use the phone for and whether it’s for one person or many.
For the individual user, people tend NOT to use SmartPhone devices.
The most common things an individual user uses are voice (phone call making), SMS, ringtones, Bluetooth & the camera. Some of the more exotic things an individual user uses is the video camera, push to talk, GPS, POP email access, international travel and more. You don’t need a SmartPhone to do those things and there are plenty of phone choices out there.
Now if you’re a Pro-Sumer, that is an professional who uses technology to do work faster and better (Lawyer, Consultant, Small Business Owner), than you may want to consider a Smartphone for email, access to the web, access to Word docs and Excel Spreadsheets. Popular prosumer devices include BlackBerry 7100 series & Treo 650.
Now if you’re in charge of an IT dept, all the rules change! If you want to enable secure, reliable email to all users all at once with voice and maybe even access to your back end applications then a simple way to go is to use the BlackBerry.
(Side note: Of course, BlackBerry is not considered a Smart Phone because it does not use a brand name Operating System such as Windows Mobile, Windows CE, Palm or Symbian but for the sake of the demonstrating how apps work than it’s a good example.)
If you’re in charge of an IT dept that is extermely cutting edge and want to enable Sales Force Automation (SFA), Customer Relationship Management software (CRM) or leverage existing IT infrastructure then you may want to consider integrating a device like the WiFi, Bluetooth, EVDO or EDGE -enabled devices like the PPC 6700 to do the work. Downside becomes IT support in case anything comes up, blows up!
NOW FOR THE ULTIMATE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE: If you’re an individual who wants to look smart and show off some BLING than the rules change – get a Treo 650 for looks and cool features, get a BlackBerry 7100 series for IM and email, get a Nextel I930 because it’s a great looking phone with international capabilities, etc. The application here is vanity and it sells. If you really like it and it sets you apart from the crowd than go for it – you deserve it – get the hottest SmartPhone out there for yourself!!!!!!!! danny_o
