How do I remove contacts from iphone that have already been deleted?

Hello: I hope this makes sense. I deleted a lot of contacts from my iphone contact list but when I went to send an email, they were still there. Meaning, if I press the letter “A” all contacts come up that start with “A” even though they are no longer in my contact/address list.
