OK, I really want to get a Blackberry, smart phone, PDA, trio..Whatever…Anyway, I am wondering if I can get one of these phones without paying for the monthly Internet service…It seems crazy to pay $50 a month extra just for Internet, so can I just get the phone without the data package and just use it as a phone?…Does anyone know? (again, this is through verizon wireless)

    Yes…and No.

When you intially sign up, the salesman at the stores will require you to purchase the data packages that come along with the phone. Their theory is “why buy a Blackberry, Treo, or any other smart phone if you are not going to use it for it’s features”. Kind of like purchasing a sports car without high performance tires I guess.

But the way around it is to purchase it with the data pack, and then take it off as soon as you can. They will give you fits about it, but it’s possible. I had a customer come in to do an upgrade the other day and she had a Verizon Treo 650p with no data attached to the plan…..of course when she upgraded to the 700p, I asked her if she wanted the data package placed on her plan….nope. Instead of a smartphone, she has a bulky phone. thomas p
