What is the real benefit of a smart phone? Other than an office suite, is there any real app noteworthy?

Max asked:

What makes a smart phone so superior to non-os phones… they all can run google apps and other java based applications.. I am curious as to why they are so hyped… At the end of the day all I see is only the office suites like documents to go or quick office that one can really call apps… Or am I mistaken?

Benefits are many. I own a Palm pre so let me start with things that I can do.
    1. Check concert dates, add them to my calendar, send to my friends, view venue layout and buy tickets.
    2. Check movie listings, watch previews, find nearest theatre, buy tickets, map it and have 3d voice navigation take me there.
    3. Sync my contacts with Facebook
    4. Listen to radio
    5. Watch tv
    6. Translate language and convert currency
    7. Read restaurant reviews, get numbers and directions
    8. Read the news and books
    9. Check out weather complete with live radar
    10. Follow football games live with live radio
    11. Connect to wifi and have a full screen browser
    12. Use google voice (free calls!)
    13. Track a flight
    and about 1,000 other things
iPhone has 75,000 apps in its catalog. Of course, 70,000 of them are useless (fart and flashlight apps) but even if 5,000 are good imagine the possibilties. cyg
